Your garden will always benefit from a spot of planning as well as doing, and there’s no better time than in January to have a good look around and make some well-judged resolutions about what you want to change, plant, and improve during the coming year!
Far from being a time of dormancy, there is plenty to keep you busy in the garden during January and it’s wonderful for your own health and well-being to get out into the fresh air, plan ahead and do some gardening that will reward you with riches later in the year.
Mulch Fruit Bushes
This is the ideal time to give fruit bushes a good covering with well-rotted compost that will break down into the soil over the next few months and encourage a good crop.
Winter Prune Wisteria
Wisteria pruning isn’t complicated. Carry out pruning this vigorous climber now, and you will be rewarded with a show-stopping display of flowers later in spring!
Winter pruning is carried out when the plant is leafless and dormant. It is more severe, reducing last year’s growth to two or three buds. This shapes the plant and ensures that the flowers will not be obscured by foliage.
Sow early veg seeds
When the weather restricts the gardening we can do, it’s nice to start the year feeling active. A good way to do this is to get on with sowing the seed of veg and salads that will produce an early spring crop. Things like radish, and certain salads, are a good place to start.
Remove fallen leaves from emerging bulbs
Over the next few weeks, different bulbs will emerge – from small, early flowers such as snowdrops – to larger bulbs like tulips later in the season. None of these bulbs enjoy being covered with leaves, so to ensure they get plenty of sunshine, make sure you remove garden leaves regularly.
Feed the birds
This is the time of year when a lot of garden birds will be struggling to find food, so either put up a bird table, or, if you already have one, make sure it is regularly topped up with offerings. You could also make your own bird seed cake treats!
New Year Resolutions!
With your garden stripped back to basics in winter, start the year productively. Take a good look at your garden and think of some changes or improvements you would like to action in the coming year. They can be very simple, like adding a single new plant; or highly ambitious, like building that new conservatory or boundary fence. Either way, you’ll get a sense of achievement when they’re done in a few months time!
