What to Sow & Grow in April: Your Gardening Guide

If March is the month that sparks excitement, April is when things really begin to happen. The days are noticeably longer, soil temperatures across most of the UK have edged past that all-important 7 to 10 degree mark, and the growing season starts to gather real momentum. April always feels like the point where the garden stops holding back and properly gets going! Let’s take a look at what you can be doing in the garden this month…

What Makes April so Special?

What really sets April apart is just how much you can start all at once. The list of seeds to sow is longer now than at any other point in the gardening calendar. Those half-hardy crops you began earlier in the year are ready to be potted on and gradually hardened off, while hardier varieties are quite happy being sown straight into the ground.

At the same time, Spring bulbs are at their best, and summer perennials are beginning to surge upwards, bringing a real sense of energy and colour back into the garden- much needed after a long and wet winter.

That said, April in the UK is not without its surprises! Frost is still a very real possibility, in certain parts of the UK more than others. Always keep a roll of horticultural fleece to hand throughout the month. It is one of the most useful bits of kit you can own at this time of year.

What to Sow Outdoors

With improving soil conditions, there’s plenty you can sow directly outside now:

  • Carrots – Sow thinly into fine, stone-free soil for straight roots.
  • Beetroot – Reliable and easy, perfect for succession sowing.
  • Spinach & chard – Fast-growing and ideal for early harvests.
  • Radishes – One of the quickest wins in the garden.
  • Peas – Sow directly or transplant seedlings started earlier.
  • Spring onions – Great for small spaces and continuous cropping.

If your soil is still heavy or slow to warm, consider using cloches or covering with fleece to give seeds a head start.

What to Sow Indoors or Undercover

Tender crops still need protection, but April is the perfect time to get them going:

  • Courgettes, pumpkins & squashes – Start in pots indoors or in a greenhouse.
  • Sweetcorn – Sow individually in modules for strong starts.
  • Runner beans & French beans – Get them going undercover ready for planting out in May.
  • Tomatoes – If you haven’t sown yet, there’s still time for a great crop.

A sunny windowsill or greenhouse will do the job nicely – just watch out for leggy growth by giving seedlings plenty of light.

Flowers to brighten the Month Ahead

April isn’t just about veg – there’s plenty to sow for colour too:

  • Cosmos – Easy, airy flowers that keep going all summer.
  • Zinnias – Bold and vibrant, best started under cover.
  • Nigella (Love-in-a-mist) – Ideal for direct sowing outdoors.
  • Sunflowers – A favourite for all ages and great for pollinators.

Jobs to keep on top of

Alongside sowing, April is a busy maintenance month:

  • Weeding – Stay ahead now and save yourself hours later.
  • Mulching – Lock in moisture and suppress weeds as temperatures rise.
  • Feeding – Give plants a boost with a balanced fertiliser.
  • Lawn care – First proper cuts, edging, and feeding can all begin.

Need a Helping Hand?

April is full of possibility. It’s a month where effort quickly turns into visible results, and each week brings something new to enjoy. Whether you’re sowing seeds for the first time or building on years of experience, this is when the garden really starts to reward you.

Get stuck in, keep an eye on the weather, and enjoy the pace picking up – because from here on out, it doesn’t slow down.
